Amrit Kaur: A Plethora of Ever-Blooming Flowers
A Plethora of Ever-Blooming Flowers, acrylics, pastels and ink on canvas, 2019.
Amrit Kaur is a visual artist who is constantly evolving her art style by incorporating new mediums in her work. The artist’s one-of-a-kind, unique art is deeply intertwined with her natural surroundings - the hills, and the oceans of Aotearoa.
She portrays a deep sentiment for the native culture, where bits and pieces of Indigenous Māori mythology are shared in concurrently with knowledge gained from her Sikh faith. The artist believes that her work is an integral part of storytelling, her prints and acrylic marked canvases reveal a truth hidden in the facade of a mundane human life - the decaying ecosystem, on the verge of extinction. She encourages her viewers to adopt an eco-conscious mentality and to act as guardians of the whenua, land.
About Amrit’s work:
“The cycle of a flower bouquet - bought at a fluctuating market price, then arranged in a cute opp shopped vase, followed by being adored and watered everyday until the decaying process begins. It’s difficult to part with beautiful things and that’s why the artist created this art print - something that will last for a wee bit longer than a plucked flower.”
Currently, Amrit is busy planning workshops for Masala Bazaar’s future pop up, while studying online and working part-time.
Amrit, what’s your connection to Manzana?
I heard about Manzana through Dil Khosa. It was not until I met the co-founder of Manzana that I learned a bit about what the organisation does. It was really nice to see that there is place which cares about sustainability and is providing a space for POC / LGBTQ + artists, creators, small businesses etc.
A Plethora of Ever-Blooming Flowers is currently for sale. If you would like to know more about the work, please contact the Manzana team at kaitiaki@manzana.org.nz
